5 Things To Support Building Trust In A Team

If you want to build a team that performs at its highest level then you need to focus on building trust.

Trust is an essential part of teamwork. Without trust, people will not work together effectively. Team members must be able to rely on each other and trust that they will act in good faith.

Here are 5 ways to build trust within your team.

1. Be transparent about whatโ€™s going on with your business

Transparency builds trust because it shows others how things really are. If you don’t share information openly, people won’t know if there’s something wrong or right with your company. They’ll assume everything is fine when nothing could be further from the truth.ย

When you’re honest about problems, you can get help quickly and fix them before they become big issues for your organization.

2. Give credit where credit is due

When someone does well,ย  appreciate them by focussing on their character strengths. For example it may be perseverance, kindness,ย  or good judgement that enabled them to deliver a great outcome. This form or recognition is very powerful in showing that you notice their personal effort and unique strengths behind the outcome.ย

3. Make sure everyone knows what they need to do

It is difficult for team members to be accountable without role clarity and clear objectives. They also need a level of mastery in the skills required to achieve the desired outcomes.ย

4. Don’t micromanage

When you have lots of tasks to complete, try delegating some responsibilities so that you can spend less time managing and more time working. Delegation gives you control over your schedule while still allowing you to accomplish important goals.

5. Have fun!

We are a social species. Having fun increases productivity by reducing stress levels and improving morale. Team rituals that enable people to get to know each other authentically, enable deeper connection and are important for a positive and connected ‘relational’ culture to develop.

The key thing here is to make sure that all team members feel valued and appreciated. You should never underestimate the power of appreciation. It has been shown that even one sincere compliment per day makes a huge difference to our mood and performance.

So remember these tips next time you find yourself struggling to build trust in your teams.
