Creating a Culture Where People Grow

The best leaders do not simply solve problems. They create the conditions for people to succeed. This workshop is about those conditions: how safe your team feels, who ends up holding the problems, and what your everyday conversations actually grow.

Why this workshop, and why now

Every interaction either builds confidence, capability and ownership, or it reinforces dependency. Most leaders never see the moment it happens. It is the three seconds after someone speaks up, the file that lands back on your desk at 5pm, the question you answer instead of ask. Teams do not grow to the level of a values statement. They grow to the level their leader’s reactions make safe. This workshop makes that visible, then hands people the tools to change it on Monday.

What participants will be able to do

  • Apply social intelligence to read behavioural patterns and adapt their leadership to different people
    and situations
  • Recognise the four stages of psychological safety and identify the leadership behaviours that build
    each one
  • Audit the real cost of speaking up on their own team, and name the behaviour that sets it
  • Shift from the Drama Triangle to the Empowerment Triangle to build ownership, accountability and
    problem solving
  • Hand problems back without abandoning people, using a coaching question instead of a rescue
  • Run everyday coaching conversations with the GROW framework to grow capability and
    performance
  • Leave with one tool, one named conversation and a date to have it by

What we cover

  • Psychological safety, four stages. Included, learner, contributor, challenger. Where teams stall, and why.
  • The evidence. Google’s Project Aristotle, Amy Edmondson’s research, and what actually predicts team performance.
  • The price of speaking up. A card based table activity that surfaces the unwritten rules on your own team.
  • Drama Triangle to Empowerment Triangle. Rescuer, victim and persecutor, played out live in the room, then turned.
  • The rescue rewrite. Practising the hand back question on a real problem you took back this month.
  • GROW coaching rounds. Peer coaching in trios on a live challenge, with observers capturing the best questions.
  • Commitment. One tool. One conversation. By Friday.

Formats

We offer flexible formats tailored to your schedule and goals:

Psychological safety, ownership and coaching conversations. Highly interactive, participant workbook included.

The half day paired with strengths and Appreciative Inquiry. Participants map what is already strong in the team, interview each other for the conditions that grew them, then build the safety and coaching practice on top of it. The combination works well for teams heading into change, restructure or a new leadership group.

A condensed, highly interactive version for leadership conferences and all staff days. The room gets the psychological safety evidence, the triangle played out live on stage, and one coaching practice round in pairs from their seats. Everyone leaves with one question to use in their next conversation. Works for rooms of 30 to 300.

Groups of 8 to 30 for the workshop formats, and larger rooms for the conference session 60 min | 90 min | 2 hrs

Included. Printed participant workbook, activity materials.

Who It’s For

Leaders and managers who already carry responsibility for other people’s growth:

  • Team leaders
  • Senior Practitioners
  • Managers of Managers
  • Executive Groups

It works especially well where technical expertise is high and people are promoted for their craft, then find themselves responsible for a team. Government, legal and professional services, health and community services, engineering and manufacturing, education, and not for profit. Conference and event organisers also book the condensed session as a practical, high energy alternative to a lecture style keynote. No prior training is assumed. Nobody is diagnosed or labelled.

Part of a series

This workshop is one of four in the Leading a Well Team suite. Each runs as a standalone half day or combines into a full day.

Bring this to your team

Every program is shaped around the group in the room: their sector, their language, their real challenges. Tell us who your leaders are and what you want different by Christmas.
